Here are a few sources of USB chips:

- Philips Semiconductors

The PDIUSBD12 is a low cost device according to Philips information. It provides 6 endpoints and has an 8-bit parallel interface. It comes in a 28-pin package.

The ISP1181A provides a more sophisticated alternative, with 14 endpoints and a 16-bit parallel bus. This device is not quite adequate with MSP430 apps. The device has 48 pins.

- FTDIchips

FTDI provides solutions with parallel and serial ports. The standard parallel port device is named FT245BM. This device has an 8-bit parallel port and comes in a 32-pin package. See also the reference project with an FTDI chip.

FTDI provides PC-side (host) drivers free of charge.

General USB-resources

A very good site providing a lot of information and other links is www.lvr.com/usb.htm. The official USB page is here.
